Three interesting articles that caught my eye:

1) The Han Chinese apparently originated from South East Asia! So this means that Singaporean Chinese are descendants of people who were actually migrating back to their homeland? I will go try and grab the article from Science and take a more in depth look.

2) The work cleaners do are worth way more to society than tax accountants and bankers, according to this article from BBC. Our suspicions have been confirmed.

3) A set of photos from a photojournalist in China showing the extent and effects of pollution there. This is partly why striking a deal in Copenhagen was so important. It’s sad that with all the politicking and the little they achieved, the Chinese still has the cheek to declare the summit a success.

Looks Like Six Warnings are Not Enough 2

This article in ST today that seriously reeks of a PR spiel and damage control for the PAP. Apparently some wards have the ability to do daily checks, while others are still helpless after six warnings. And I do have the question the efficacy of doing daily checks; wouldn’t focusing on complaints be easier and more effective?

And to fully get my goat, in the print version of the article, our Education Minister Dr. Ng Eng Hen says a chilli bottle hitting a man’s head and putting him in a coma with serious head injuries, is a, and I quote, “near miss”, since the person isn’t “paralyzed or dead”. Tell that to the guy lying in the hospital now.

Story from NY Times. Good if you have totally no idea what the climate talks are about. I think the writer left out a fifth category though, the apathists (I can’t find a name for people who are apathetic!).

Looks Like Six Warnings are Not Enough

After 6 warnings in 3 months and this tragedy still happened? In the ST report, the officers said they could not find the culprit after door-to-door knocking, whereupon they resorted to simply warning the residents about killer litter. Couldn’t much more have been done, given the potentially disastrous consequences (which has now actualised) it can have?! Ridiculous!

Grabbing this off TOC, it’s another piece that blasts the PAP for what they have done and what they are doing. I could be biased, but after a brief scan of it and its comments, it feels more like another “I need to get this off my chest!” piece that revolves around the same point (the Lee family sucks!) than an objectively written and well researched one. What do you think? Perhaps someone can point out what I’m missing.
